Two world-renowned dancers head a pioneering company dancing to music by two world-changing artists.

Founded by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson—both legendary former principal dancers with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater—Complexions Contemporary Ballet continues to push ballet into the future with electrifying dancers and mesmerizing choreography. The company’s Hancher debut will feature Bach 25, set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and STAR DUST, a dazzling love letter to David Bowie set to his music and reveling in his colorful and energetic imagination.

Club Hancher hosts day one of a two-day celebration of spoken word and its power to bear witness, create community, and inspire change. 

Rudy Francisco has been the National Underground Poetry Slam Champion, the Individual World Poetry Slam Champion, and the National Poetry Slam Champion. He’s performed his work on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and penned six collections of poetry. The accolades are impressive, but his performances are another thing all together. Blending social critique, introspections, honesty, and humor, Francisco hones in on the interconnectedness of human existence.

Spoken word poet Emanuelee Bean is known—appropriately enough—as “Outspoken Bean,” and has been Houston’s Poet Laureate and a recipient of an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship.

Historic and groundbreaking, Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf is a choreopoem that celebrates womanhood and discovery through an inimitable combination of storytelling, poetry, dance, and song. Through monologues and conversation, these women weave a tapestry of joy and triumph despite tragedy as they discover their own rainbows. Directed by Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, a cast member of the NY Shakespeare Festival’s original award-winning Broadway production and First National Tour and choregraphed by Christine Catherine Wyatt, for colored girls… leads us on a journey to find hope after the storm.

Freddie Old Soul is a healer and emcee from the South Side of Chicago, embodying nostalgic renaissance and inspiring creativity through words of affirmation. As she moves and heals others with her words, she heals herself. Through her active role as a medicine woman, along with her dedication to speaking words that free her people, she is on an unstoppable road to restoring and aiding the community.

Freddie’s newest 2022 album, Water, Music & Love, delivers another testament to her refreshing yet familiar authenticity. Water Music & Love depicts a time where Freddie found herself submerged in what truly makes her happy. While on a healing journey towards self discovery, her and Stepchild link up to create a soulful vibe. Sonically the album shows a softer side to the rapper giving us a look into her world when she’s in love. The album and this live experience will be a declaration of self and a recognition of the elements of life that bring balance and therapy.

TheZeffsterr
A remarkable and professional performing artist specializing in hip-hop music. His achievements in the industry have made him a pacesetter with amazing contributions. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Iowa City, Iowa for college in 2017 (which is where he resides his artistry), TheZeffsterr is able to tell his story is such a fresh and unique way. His background as a classical, Jazz, and Latin musician gives him a decade's worth of experience in the industry, coupled with his learned and acquired knowledge and skills, enables him to build a successful brand and career.

Glen "Kurr-is" Waters is a rapper, poet, and educator from Dallas, Texas. During his time in Iowa, Kurr-is has performed as the inaugural emcee for the University's Black Popular Music Ensemble (BPM) and the University of Iowa Theatre's All Black Affair Series. Kurr-is' style of hip-hop fuses hard-hitting southern sound, with lyrical and conscious soul-binding lyrics with various styles of production to fit the mood. As an educator, Kurr-is teaches his students at the University of Iowa about the intersection of poetry and music to aid their artistic journey.

“I came to understand my voice as a pianist through John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme,” says pianist, composer, and improviser Nduduzo Makhathini. “As someone who started playing jazz very late, I had always been looking for a kind of playing that could mirror or evoke the way my people danced, sung, and spoke. [McCoy] Tyner provided that.” A central figure in South Africa’s vibrant jazz scene, Makhathini creates ambitious music that is at once an act of cultural reclamation and a revelatory blending of technique and creativity.

Join Soul House Wellness & Breathing Room Yoga for a yoga class curated for and by people of color!
This hour is intended to be a safe space for mind, body and spirit relaxation while giving people of color the chance to reclaim an ancient practice that originated in their own cultures.
You can expect a gentle hatha flow, offering modifications to suit each persons' individual practice and skill level, followed by a grounding gong bath.
This is a donation based class: suggested donation is $20, but you are invited to pay what you can!
